Getting Healthy Enough to Survive Jurassic World - MCG

Getting Healthy Enough to Survive Jurassic World - MCG Do you have what it takes to survive Jurassic World? On a normal day at Jurassic World, remaining on the human side of the raptor cage, not taking a dip in the mosasaurus tank, and keeping your hands and feet within the giant hamster ball vehicle (the gyrosphere) is enough to survive. Unfortunately, Jurassic theme parks are ticking time bombs with very sharp teeth and claws. In the words of Jurassic Park survivor Ian Malcolm, a mathematician who specialized in chaos theory: “Life will not be contained. Life breaks free.” Despite the potential danger, the ability to see prehistoric dinosaurs is too good to refuse. For all you know, the dinosaurs might wait until the weekend after your scheduled visit to escape from their cages to feast on human flesh. And with that in mind, how can you not go? As you prepare for your dinosaur filled visit, your preparations should include a regular workout regime. Yes, the Indominus Rex can run up to 30 mph, but you only need to be fast enough to outrun the woefully out of shape guy standing next to you. Here are a few steps to help you survive your visit. Step 1: Travel with a Pack of Couch Huggers The good news is that you might not need to train yourself too much to outrun the guy or gal next to you. In 2013, 22.9% of adults in the United States lived sedentary lifestyles. This means that nearly a quarter of your fellow park attendees spend very little time walking or running on a daily and weekly basis. You want to escape the park alive? Keeps an eye out for those sedentary individuals. These people: Pant as they walk up and down the stairs. Pause constantly to catch their breath. Possess as much muscle mass as a toddler. Tend to be at least a little overweight. Once you identify these individuals, stick close to them. Animals travel in packs for a reason. Part of that is to lower the chances that they will be the one targeted by predators. If you’re unsure you will locate these individuals, you might want to invite a few of your work buddies. You will probably need to purchase their ticket, but the fact they will be heroically sacrificing themselves for you, will be worth racking up some credit card debt. Step 2: Run For Your Life Start working out now. Remember only a quarter of the population does not work out at all. That means the more you work out, the higher the likelihood, you will be able to outrun the other 75% of the population when the T-Rex or I-Rex hunt you down. Here’s some tips to begin your workout journey: Locate an app like Zombies, Run! Or The Walk to turn your workout into a game. Both transform walking into a fun adventure. Find a workout buddy to keep you going. Bike, ice skate, dance. Choose an activity you enjoy. This will take less willpower. Just keep reminding yourself, you might need to flee from a dinosaur soon. The threat of death can be great motivation. Step 3: Keep Away Disease Diseases can make it harder to keep one step ahead of killer dino’s. Why? Cardiovascular disease (CVD) and diabetes both require individuals take regular doses of antibiotics. The I-Rex isn’t going to wait patiently as you give yourself an insulin shot. Inconsiderate, I know… but so is eating people. And if he didn’t enjoy doing that, we wouldn’t be having this conversation. Here’s what you need to do. Check with a doctor to see if you’re in danger of CVD and diabetes. The fact that you might be young and in your prime, will not mean you will remain physically healthy. Here’s an uncomfortable truth: In 2010, 86 million Americans were diagnosed with pre-diabetes. And 12% of American men and 10.1% of American women from the range of 20 to 39 were diagnosed with CVD. Dino attacks and diseases, in both cases being forewarned can allow you to arm yourself to beat the odds. You can reduce the chance of developing either disease by working out for 30 minutes five times a week, eat a healthy diet, keep a healthy weight, and get at least seven hours of sleep each night. Step 4: Lose Some Weight A healthy weight can not only ward off disease, it could potentially make you a less appetizing meal. After all, what self-respecting dinosaur would go after a human blade of grass instead of a plump, juicy drumstick? Now’s the time to either begin losing weight or making strides to maintain your current weight. Successfully losing weight is a combination of a regular work out regime and adopting the right diet. One vegetable you can add to your diet to maximize your weight loss potential is the chili pepper. Chili peppers, according to UC medical laboratory professor JE Mortenson, possesses a chemical called capsaicin. The Power of Capsaicin explains that capsaicin can be utilized to naturally promote weight loss. How does this work? Well, the capsaicin once ingested “up regulates metabolism,” “help[s] the body to metabolize fat molecules” and “decreases the appetite.” Stick with the healthy diet, the regular fitness regime, and add chili paste or peppers to every other meal â€" you’ll be on a slow and steady journey to a trimmer, slimmer, and most importantly less appetizing, to dinosaurs anyway, figure. Jurassic World is the event of the summer. No other theme park gives you the ability to see a real T-Rex, Raptor, or an mosasaurus. A smart park visitor boards a plane fully expecting that they might need to run and fight for their life when the dinosaur’s inevitably escape. Before setting foot in the park, survival depends on being as physically fit as possible. Featured image a mash-up of  The Difference a Degree Makes: Infographic and  Jurassic Park Wikia.

6 Ways to Reject a Candidate as Painlessly as Possible

6 Ways to Reject a Candidate as Painlessly as Possible Rejection is part and parcel of the recruitment process. Unfortunately, you will always have to turn down more candidates than you hire. However, how you dismiss candidates speaks volumes about your company and its culture. Bad rejection practices can seriously damage your companys reputation and that all-important employer brand! Research conducted by Jobbio found that 82% of people would not work at a company with a bad reputation. With so much riding on the process, you really cant afford to mess it up. Heres how to reject a candidate without hurting anyones feelings. 1. Let the candidate know ASAP Many hiring managers wait until the end of the hiring process before they notify unsuccessful candidates. Some even wait until their new hire has started work. This is just disrespectful. Your candidate may be delaying applying for other roles or even turning down offers in the hope of securing the gig at your company. Once you have made your decision, let the applicant know. Put them out of their misery as quickly as possible. Respect other people’s time and they are more likely to respect yours. 2. Pick up the phone If youve spoken to the candidate on the phone previously, you really should give them a call to let them know that they are not the right person for the job. Emails can often seem cold and impersonal. Take a few extra moments out of your day and pick up the phone. Always thank the candidate for the time and effort that they put into their application. Let them know that you have already offered or are planning to offer the job to someone else but you appreciate their interest.  Its also a good idea to send them an email reiterating this information so they have a record of the conversation. 3. Keep it brief Explain in one succinct sentence or paragraph why youre declining the applicant, for example, Although we were very impressed with your skills, we have decided to go with an applicant who had more hands-on marketing experience. This will give them an idea of the areas that they need to work on without entering into a long and lengthy discussion. It is a good idea to always include a few positive points as well. You shouldn’t sugarcoat things but it is important to not come across as overly negative. Remember you want to be firm but fair. 4. Personalize, personalize, personalize Nothing says ‘’we don’t care about you’’ more than a stale rejection email or cold phone call. Always include the person’s name and mention things that you spoke about during your interview. Remember you are dashing this person’s hopes so the least you can do is treat them with respect and consideration. Treat others the way you want to be treated. 5. Be honest Now is not the time to start making false promises. If you are genuinely interested in staying in touch with the candidate then finish off your phone call or email with an offer to stay in contact about upcoming roles. Connect with them on LinkedIn and save their details for future reference. However, if you cant imagine the candidate working in your company at any stage then do not give them false hope. Wish them all the best in the future and leave it at that. Candidates will always appreciate your candor. 6. Ask for feedback Hiring is a two-way street. Asking for feedback is the best possible way to find out what applicants think of your hiring process. While most companies are happy to dish out feedback to applicants, most fail to ask for it in return meaning theyre missing out on valuable learnings. Asking your candidates for feedback shows that you care about their opinion and respect what they have to say. Don’t just ask successful candidates. You should attempt to survey all talent. Use this feedback to structure your hiring process. This will help you to ensure a fair procedure is in place. So, when we heard about our employer partner EYs #EYFutureSkills initiative, we knew we had to share it with you. Theyve come up with five key skills you need to succeed at work. Read on for the secrets to careers success ?? How these future skills were identified So, EY are basically the real MVPs. The World Economic Forum recently grilled 350 HR leaders from the worlds biggest organisations. What about? Basically which skills they thought would be in the greatest demand in their business in 2020. Based off those findings, EY got to work to narrow this research down to five key future skills. Loads of cool things were brought up. Artificial intelligence and smart machines were predicted to replace a ton of jobs. However, this means that the future workplace will consist of people with skills that have even more of a human touch. Because, you know, machines cant replace  everything.   Without further ado, here are the five future skills you need for career success in 2020. After all, its important to plan ahead. Complex problem solving Seems pretty obvious, we know. But problem solving is undoubtedly one of the most important skills you can have to impress at work. Why? Because this is something thats not only difficult to find, but is hard to teach. This is the ability to look at complex information or a tricky situation, and make an informed and accurate decision when choosing a response. Whats truly impressive to employers is a candidates ability to prioritise. If you can demonstrate an understanding of what is and isnt important, this shows a high level of critical thinking. Creativity When most people would look right, youre the kinda person who would look left instead. Companies are craving creativity in their workforce. Creativity leads to innovation, after all, and innovation leads to business success. Companies in 2020 are more likely to look for candidates who are both entrepreneurial and inventive. These will be individuals who arent afraid to challenge the status quo, and really make some waves in the business. Creative people will thrive in any kind of industry. Its not just about creative writing or art its about being able to think outside the box. Collaboration Guys, we all have to get along, ya hear? This isnt just about getting on with your colleagues. This is also about being adaptable to new people, being socially and culturally aware, and developing relationships even in tough circumstances. Phew. Our prediction is that companies will look for individuals who arent just great team players, but team leaders. People who champion diversity, and are able to bring the best out of their fellow team mates. A great team is only as strong as its weakest link, after all. Cognitive flexibility Brainy folks, this one is for you. EY have predicted that companies will start looking for candidates who are basically advanced multi-taskers. Adaptability and flexibility will take you very far in your career, if you have this skill. Essentially, demonstrating this will involve constantly testing and improving new skills, agility in multi-tasking, and being able to conceptualise multiple ideas at once. Whats most important? The ability to adapt to change. The working world will constantly throw crazy obstacles at you. Theyre looking for people that can not only dodge the shrapnel, but can take it and turn it into something positive. Emotional intelligence Dont worry folks, were not about to get all fuzzy on you. Real talk: empathy is going to be one of your five keys to success in the future. Being able to listen, have self-control, and navigate tough social situations will solidify you as an A* candidate. Successfully demonstrating this skill will highlight that youre mature, level-headed and resilient. Bonus points if youre able to maintain a positive outlook even through the toughest times. So there you have it. The five future skills thatll lead you to career success, thanks to the good people over at EY. Use this new-found information wisely, gang, and dont forget to share it with your pals. Connect with Debut on Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn for more careers insights.
